10/10 would daily. This has the IH 6.9l which was the precursor to the 7.3. and made a whooping 175hp, and 300ft/lbs you know about as much as a 2015 TDI. This was the only turbo diesel availble in a Ford Light Duty 83-87

Wow. A nearly 7L engine producing < 200 HP? Is this a diesel thing, or just an older engine thing?

It’s a diesel thing. The engine’s an IDI/Navistar. It only makes “170HP” at 3300RPM, but it makes 315ft/lbs @ 1400RPM. Which is still utterly abysmal.

But the 7.3 better shows it. It only makes 210-275HP, but makes 425-525ft/lbs. Lotsa torque.

A bit of both.

70s and 80s engine thing they hadn’t quite gotten the technology down yet.

Both.

But it doesn’t mean it’s inherently a bad thing (other than being a bit slow and not good on gas). Big and lazy engines make all their power down low, so they move as soon as you dip into the throttle, don’t have to rev high or downshift on uphills, and can drive at highway speeds at near idle RPMs, and often last a very long time because of the low stress and speed .

Overall, i t makes for a very relaxing driving experience. (which is good, because you’re not going to go any faster if you drive angry.)

This is the correct answer.

These are non-turbo International Harvester engines, made in both 6.9 and 7.3 sizes, toward the end they were available with a turbo, before ford went to the 7.3 Powerstroke.

The 6.9 became a 7.3 (still IDI), then a few years later the 7.3 Powerstroke came along.

Looks neat, while being both impossible to park and dangerously slow.
